Dermalogica Skin Treatment Facial

img_2646

I finally treated myself to a Dermalogica facial ! Now I have had them before and do use the products at work and in my own skincare routine; so I know a fair amount about the products. But its been forever since I re-evaluated what I was using on my skin and actually treated myself to some much needed ‘down time’. This last month has been a bit crazy for me and my family (and my skin was definitely NOT behaving) and I wanted to just take some time out and chill., switch off and recuperate.

This is my experience receiving a Dermalogica Skin Treatment Facial at a new salon that I haven’t been to before. I wanted to go in completely blind and for my therapist to also be unaware of my status as a Beauty Therapist. So I did not let on about my job, experiences or what products I already use.

Basically I wanted to test myself to make sure that I hadn’t gotten comfortable with my skincare routine and also test the skin therapist and check that she knew what she was doing and what she was recommending me was correct.

The Steps to a Healthier Skin Future

  • Booking – I decided to ring a local salon and book a facial. I acted ignorant to what I needed and allowed the receptionist to ask questions on my skin and my current needs from “Have you had a facial recently?” to “Do you suffer from acne prone skin?” to “Are you a lady of mature age?” etc. The receptionist quickly ascertained which of their facial treatments would be best suited to my ‘skincare goals/ needs’ I then chose a day and time and all was set.

  • Arrival – The receptionist who I spoke when booking the appointment advised me to arrive 15 minutes before my treatment time to complete a consultation, so I arrived early. I was offered a glass of water and a comfortable seat to sit in. The receptionist then came over and offered me the consultation sheet on a clipboard and explained what and how I needed to complete it.

  • Consultation – At first I was a little daunted by the size of the consultation, a little bigger than an A4 piece of paper and double sided. But I have to say it was very detailed and definitely allowed the therapist to understand what I use on my skin, my stress levels, medications, and what I expected from the treatment etc. I think this for me is one of the best features of a Dermalogica Skin Treatment (Along with its products and skin mapping, but I’ll get to that a little later on).

  • Treatment – Upon completion of my consultation my therapist Emma White* took me through to the treatment room (5 MINUTES EARLY!), it was a warm, calm and tranquil environment. With dim lighting and relaxing ‘spa’ music and comfy bedding and seating areas it was truly heaven. Emma* then spoke through the consultation with me, asking in more detail certain questions such as ‘What products do you use?” , “How often do you use these?” “Does anything trigger your spotty outbreaks?” etc. She allowed me to change in private and I got on the bed having removed my top and bra and covering myself with the towel provided. When she came back she washed her hands and then explained which of the products she would be using to benefit my skin after a very detailed Dermalogica Skin Mapping. She explained that she would not be using the steamer on this occasion as she wanted to address the outbreak I was currently experiencing. She used a deep exfoliation to really deep clean my skins surface, and products from the Medibac Range. She then applied the face masque she allowed me relax alone in the room for around 10 minutes, something that I was taught never to do with a client. (What if they started to have a reaction to a product? what if they fell of the bed etc.) However I have to say this time alone did relax me and I assume that Emma had gone to collect samples and write my prescription of products, and aftercare advice in this time. The treatment itself was relaxing, the pressure points and lymphatic drainage she used on my face and scalp was divine. My skin felt amazing afterwards with a red healthy glow. Emma* left me to re-dress and then told me to meet her downstairs to go through the treatment aftercare advice and product optionsOverall this Dermalogica Skin Treatment was very relaxing and very informative, for an hour its £39.00 so not cheap and if you want a scalp, arm or back massage (Dermalogica Touch Therapy) with it its an extra £10.oo for an additional 15mins. Although I did go in earlier than my treatment time and finished 10 minutes after the original finish time so I did get a longer treatment than I had paid for (This could be because I was a new client?). A great treatment, I’ve since rebooked a facial with Emma* but am still looking at other salons in the area.
  • Aftercare Advice – Emma* had a glass of lemon water waiting for me a comfy chair with a hot water bottle on to keep me warm, she then went through my skin mapping sheet, advised me on how to use my current skincare and what would be beneficial to add in. Emma was very happy to show me the products but did not in any way force me to buy them or become pushy, she offered me samples and took my payment and then asked if I wanted to rebook.

Overall a really great treatment and experience, at £39.00 for an hour its not cheap however.

I have since rebooked with Emma for another skin treatment as well as reflexology, manicure and pedicure.

Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque Review !

Dermalogica is a brand that I love, my main skincare routine contains a lot of their products and I recently had a Dermalogica Skin Treatment Facial were the skin therapist recommended that I tired the Sebum Clearing Masque.

But more about that treatment next week!

My Dermalogica skin therapist  recommended that I used the sebum clearing masque on my breakout areas not because I am oily but because the ‘oil absorbing clays help clear and prevent breakouts’ and the ingredient Salicylic acid ‘stimulates natural exfoliation to clear pore congestion’.

My Dermalogica skin therapist recommended how and when to use so I quickly followed her instructions when I had a massive hormonal breakout on my chin!!!

The breakout mainly consisted of deep set spots! The ones that ache all the time! And are filled with pus and are disgusting to look at!!  🙁

I persevered and didn’t squeeze them ! (Go Jess!!!)

I applied the mask (just on the breakout area, I used a different mask everywhere else!) which is white in colour and smells slightly clinical. After applying it I experienced a mild warming sensation but after about six minutes changed to a cool tingling. I left the masque on for the prescribed ten minutes and the edges of the masque had started to dry but the mask was easily removed with warm water and sponges.

After removal my skin felt tighter, cool and very refreshed ! Immediately I noticed a difference the redness had calmed and some of the pus had dissipated from the spots !

I then used multi active toner and skin smoothing cream and intensive eye repair; the next morning I was pleasantly surprised to find that my skin was clearer and no new spots had arrived. The spots no longer had any yellow pus and only ached a small amount. The redness had gone down dramatically and I could cover them easily with concealer and foundation!

Overall this product has really impressed me, I liked that I didn’t need lots of the product and that you can also use it as an on the spot treatment!! The only downside is the smell for me although not overpowering it is strong which may put some people off.

And at £41.25 for 75ml it is a little pricy but if it works it’s work paying ! (Click the link on the price to purchase!)

J 🙂

I have NOT been paid to review this product, all views are my own honest opinion.

Selling Oppurtunities!

Okay so as a beauty therapist being able to sell products to your customers will boost profits for the business and depending on your contract will even bump up your wages if you work on commission.

Many businesses especially small salons don’t particularly focus on sales they focus more on getting customers through the door and in for treatments and services that make up their main income.

As part of my action plan i wanted to focus on improving my sales skills; I’ve worked at Revive for just over two years and have a regular client base who I do struggle to sell to. Having built close relationships with these clients it was hard to sell regularly to them to earn commission and boost my income every month.

At Revive we stock a variety of brands from Dermalogica, Spa Find and Crystal Clear products; all products which I am familiar with and have used throughout my training, but still I found it hard to sell these to clients.

Over the course of the year I have practised my sales skills from actually talking about the products, showing clients how they would work for them and finally closing a sale. I can now steadily sell effectively whether it be a whole skin care routine or just exfoliating salts.

To be able to start a sales transaction I follow these steps:

Facial Treatment Sales Techniques:

1. Consultation – Determine what clients already use, find out what they would benefit from

2. Skin Analysis – What does their skin need? Can you recommend exfoliating or using a targeted treatment? Make notes and refer to these in step 3+4

3. Aftercare advice – explain the products that I’ve used and how they benefit the client. Explain things to avoid and to do after their treatment.

4. Offer clients an opportunity to ask I questions- End step 3 with asking “Now did you want to ask any questions or look at any of the products I have used today?”

5. Advise – If a client asks questions or want to look at products this is a perfect opportunity to repeat the product benefits and explain the price of each product

6. Sell- Clients will often ask if they can take a product home at this stage but you can always start this stage with asking if they would like to take your recommendations/ prescriptions home

7. Happy Client / Happy Therapist – If they decide they do want a product the client feels a sense of trust within the therapist; after all the therapist has improved their routine and therefore their skin will benefit too.

I mean fair enough some weeks are slower than others and don’t see as many sales but overall my confidence with selling has improved. And my clients also thank me for it; their skin for one thing is improving more so than just having regular facials or exfoliating treatments. Overall however I would say that the process above works about 95% of the time especially when clients are interested to begin with.

Making a sale for many people is just that; they are making money and some people are just selling for the sake of it. My aim however is to sell products that will truly benefit my clients and not just earn me more commission each week, but will gain them more benefits in the long term.

Just this last Friday I sold over £115 worth of products.

It became apparent however that at certain times of the year such as January sales dipped due to people saving money after Christmas and new year; in order to improve sales next year I would put offers on that are ‘to good to miss’ they wouldn’t dent the businesses profits and they would still earn me commission.
